Roofing advice written for Phoenix or Dallas doesn't transfer to the Puget Sound. Our roofs rarely die of UV exposure — they die of moisture: moss, trapped debris, and long wet seasons. That changes which materials make sense here.
Composition (asphalt) shingles — the regional workhorse
Architectural composition shingles are the most popular choice in Western Washington for good reason: strong weather protection, huge color selection, straightforward repairs, and the best up-front value. Modern lines from Owens Corning, Malarkey, CertainTeed, and IKO add two features that matter locally:
- Algae resistance — copper-infused granules that suppress the black streaking so common here
- High wind ratings — for the fall and winter storms that roll off the Sound
Expect 20–30 years with proper installation and maintenance. The maintenance clause is real: keep moss treated and gutters clear, or our climate will collect years off the back end.
Metal — the low-maintenance champion
Metal roofing gives moss almost nothing to grip, sheds needles instead of trapping them, and routinely serves 30+ years. For homes under heavy evergreen canopy — where a composition roof fights a constant moss battle — metal is often the last roof an owner ever buys. Upfront cost is higher, but spread over its lifespan, metal frequently wins on cost-per-year. And no, it isn't loud in the rain: over solid decking, it sounds like any other roof.
Cedar shake — the Northwest classic
Nothing matches cedar's warmth on a classic Northwest home. But cedar is a living material in a climate that stresses it: it needs debris clearing, gentle moss control, and prompt attention to split or slipped shakes. For committed owners, it's beautiful. For everyone else, today's premium composition lines mimic cedar's dimensional character with far less upkeep.
The honest answer
The right material depends on your tree cover, your architecture, how long you'll own the home, and your appetite for maintenance. A shaded Sammamish lot and a sunny Renton hilltop point to different answers. First Choice Roof Service installs all of the above — so our recommendation follows your situation, not our inventory.
