A ceiling stain is a late symptom. Water typically enters far from where it shows up, traveling along rafters and underlayment before it drips — which means the earlier you catch the signals, the cheaper the fix. Watch for these.
1. Granules collecting in gutters
A sandy sludge in your gutters means shingles are shedding their protective surface. Some shedding is normal on a new roof; on an older one, it's the material wearing out.
2. Shingles that look lifted, curled, or out of line
From the ground, scan for shingle edges that don't sit flat — wind lifting, moss underneath, or age. Lifted edges are entry points for wind-driven rain.
3. Dark streaks or moss patches
Black streaking is algae; green patches are moss. Both signal a roof holding moisture longer than it should — and moss actively lifts shingle edges as it grows.
4. Musty smell or dampness in the attic
Your attic sees leaks months before your ceiling does. A musty smell, damp insulation, or dark staining on the underside of the deck are early, actionable warnings.
5. Daylight through the roof deck
From inside the attic on a bright day: any pinpoints of light through the deck are holes water can use.
6. Stains around chimneys, skylights, or vents
Penetrations are the most common leak sources. Interior stains near a chimney or skylight usually mean flashing has failed — often a contained, affordable repair if caught early.
7. Peeling paint or rot at the fascia and eaves
When gutters clog or water backs up under the roof edge, the fascia boards pay first. Peeling paint and soft wood at the eaves are signs drainage isn't working.
